March Practices in Hazelnut Orchards

March is a crucial month for maintenance work in hazelnut orchards. Spring has arrived, and as the trees prepare for a new growth phase, the treatments applied will directly impact the yield and quality of the next season.

Things to do in March:
• Half of the recommended amount of organic fertilizer should be used this month. • Control of scale insects can be carried out before bud bursts (if not done in previous months).
• Control of bacterial blight can be carried out as buds begin to burst. • Control of hazelnut gall fly (a second treatment should be done 20 days after the first) and hazelnut leaf miner can be carried out towards the end of the month.
• If new twig borer galleries are detected in the orchards when the air temperature reaches 18-20 degrees Celsius this month, control measures should be taken against this pest.

Important Notes:

• Weather Conditions: All operations to be carried out in February should be adjusted according to weather conditions. Pruning or spraying should be postponed in rainy and cold weather.
• Expert Assistance: If you are unsure about anything related to hazelnut cultivation, it is recommended to seek help from an agricultural engineer or consultant.
• Regional Differences: Climate and soil conditions can vary between regions where hazelnuts are grown. Therefore, you should choose practices specific to your region.
