In hazelnut farming, June is a critical period when fruit development accelerates and pre-harvest maintenance work becomes crucial. Correct practices during this period are of great importance for yield, quality, and orchard health. Maintenance and inspections carried out in June directly affect both the quality of the current season's product and the yield potential of the following year.
Things to Do in June
1- Fertilization
• The second half of nitrogen fertilizer application can be continued in the first days of the month. • Microelements (boron, zinc, manganese, etc.) needed according to soil and leaf analysis results can be applied foliarly. • Analysis results should be taken as the basis for fertilization, and unnecessary applications should be avoided.
2- Pest and Disease Control
• It is important to monitor the density of hazelnut weevil and brown stink bugs. If necessary, control measures can be taken in accordance with the recommendations of the Provincial/District Agricultural and Forestry Directorates. • Regular checks should be carried out in orchards against the twig borer pest, and damaged branches should be removed. • Gardens should be monitored for pests such as aphids and internal worms, and control plans should be developed taking into account the economic damage threshold. • Protective applications and controls against powdery mildew disease should be continued.
3- Weed and Basal Shoot Removal
• Weeds growing in the gardens should be removed using mechanical methods. • Basal shoots should be removed regularly to ensure that the plant directs nutrients to the main branches. • Cleaning work should be carried out to increase air circulation within the garden.
4- Irrigation and Garden Monitoring
• Controlled irrigation can be carried out, especially in young gardens, during periods of insufficient rainfall. • Fruit development should be monitored regularly, and signs of drought stress should be observed. • Maintenance and observation work should be carried out throughout the garden in preparation for the harvest period. Regular maintenance practices carried out in June support healthy product development in hazelnut orchards and also contribute to increasing the quality and yield of the product obtained during the harvest period. It is important for our producers to regularly check their gardens and carry out their practices in accordance with technical recommendations.
