May Practices in Hazelnut Orchards

May is a critical period in hazelnut orchards, where plant growth accelerates and practices directly affecting seasonal yield become prominent. Proper care practices during this period both improve product quality and provide effective protection against pests and diseases.

At Durak Hazelnut, we closely monitor and inform our producers about the practices that need to be carried out in May to ensure sustainable and productive production.
In this context, during May:

The second phase of nitrogen fertilization is applied to support plant growth. It is recommended that the fertilizer be applied approximately 50-60 cm from the base of the bushes and within the canopy projection, then mixed into the soil. Additionally, if needed based on soil and leaf analyses, foliar fertilization with microelements can also be applied.
Regular inspections in orchards are crucial in pest and disease control. Observations should be made for pests such as the hazelnut weevil, longhorn beetle (dieback beetle), aphids, and gall fly, and appropriate control methods should be applied when necessary. When May beetles are observed, mechanical control (collection and destruction) should be preferred, and additional measures should be considered depending on the intensity. However, attention should be paid to diseases such as powdery mildew and bacterial blight; appropriate plant protection products should be used when necessary. Cultural measures such as removing infected and dried branches also play an important role in this process.
May is also a period when weeds grow rapidly. Weeds can negatively affect yield by competing with plants for water and nutrients. Therefore, weed control should be carried out in a timely manner and with the correct methods. Mechanical methods such as hoeing and shallow tillage should be preferred; when necessary, licensed and selective herbicides should be applied carefully. Methods such as mulching also offer an effective alternative in limiting weed growth.
All these applications carried out in May directly determine the yield and quality obtained at the end of the season. As Durak Hazelnut, we continue to be in the field with our producers and to spread sustainable agricultural practices.
